While I do some traditional backpacking and hiking, I still prefer a backpack for almost any type of trip. This includes visiting my parents, work and even a “luxury” trip to a nice resort or hotel. Even though it sometimes gets me some strange looks and people wonder if I am in the right place, I prefer it. Here is why:
- Overhead Airplane Space: Now days, it is common for airlines to run out of overhead space for carry-ons. And at some point in the boarding process, you are likely to hear an announcement they run out of room and to check roller boards at the gate. But I’ve found that even though my backpack is the same size (in fact, it can usually fit more than a standard US sized carry-on), it is usually completely ignored by the gate agents. And even if space is in fact tight, because it is soft shelled, I can usually stuff and squish it enough to fit. I can check it if I have to, but in several years, I can only think of one time when I’ve had to. Of course, this means I don’t have to worry about the airlines losing my luggage and I spend less time at the airport checking in / picking up my bag.
- Fits Anywhere: Similarly, when pressed for room in a taxi or a bus, a backpack can go on my lap a lot easier than a suitcase.
- Hands Free: Use of a backpack keeps my hands free. This is especially helpful when trying to navigate public transportation or anything that requires money / tickets. It also decreases the risk of someone taking my bag because it never leaves my body.
- Stairs & Cobblestones: A backpack is MUCH easier for navigating stairs and for walking on cobblestones or other unforgiving terrain.
- Able to Help Others: My mom and I often travel together, and this allows me to help with her bag instead of trying to juggle multiple pieces of luggage. And on the flip side, it means I rarely need help getting on and off public transportation for from a bell-hop.
- Identity: And frankly I just feel more adventurous and free with a backpack! It represents who I am or at least who I want to be.
