I’ve lived in and around DC for over seven years but only recently learned about Clifton VA.  A friend and I went hiking nearby and literally put “food open near here” into my phone.  We ended up at Trattoria Villagio which has been one of my best meals this year.  And across the street is Peterson’s Ice Cream which won best in VA.

When I returned to work on Monday and bragged about my find, I quickly learned that everyone knew about Clifton but me.  I also learned about Trummer’s which a co-worker gave rave reviews. I haven’t been there yet because I’ve now been to Trattoria Villagio three times in three months!

The picturesque town is less than one square mile and while not historical in any significant sense, each of the historic homes is labeled with a plaque detailing its own story.  Everything from 1920’s speakeasy to the sight where the screenplay Sleepless in Seattle was written.

The Civil War, Manassas Battlefield is less than 30 minutes away and offers tours and events April through Oct.  2024 Living History Calendar – Manassas National Battlefield Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov) Finally, nearby Bull Run Marina Regional Park has some great hiking trails. The trails are easy but can be tailored for a short ½ mile hike or more than ten miles if desired.

Next time you are looking for something to do outside of the city, consider Clifton and the surrounding area.
