The WW2 War Dog Memorial is an unexpected gem.  The memorial and cemetery are dedicated to the 25 dogs that died in combat during WW2.  They saved hundreds of lives and served their country and the island as scouts and mine detectors.  The Doberman statue includes the inscription, “Always Faithful”, which refers to both the nature of man’s best friend and to the Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis.  The original cemetery was located in Asan but was moved in 1994 to Navy Base Guam and requires base access.  Today and throughout history – civilians, children, and animals often suffer the effects of a war they didn’t start.  It is only fitting to acknowledge and remember their contributions and sacrifices.
