My travel style is electric. Sometimes you can find me in a five-star hotel and sometimes I stay in hostels. I go hiking and I go glamping. I travel with friends and family. And I travel solo.
I hear from a lot of people that they are interested in traveling solo but afraid to jump into the deep end with a big trip. Here are some ideas on how to ease into it….
Do something in your own hometown. Take a day or an afternoon and be a tourist in your own town. Go to a museum and lunch. Go on a self-guided walking tour. Visit a park.

Take a day trip or spend overnight somewhere nearby. Pick a town or city that is 1-2 hours away and explore. We often leave our own “backyard” unexplored. Enjoy having your own schedule and doing things that you really want to do.
Add a day or two to a work trip. Not every solo trip has to be long. Many of my solo trips are when I add a day or two to a work trip. A few years ago I went to London for work and added a single day to walk around my favorite city.

Spend time solo before or after a trip with family or friends. This is one of the most common ways I travel alone. A few years ago, I spent a month in South America. Three weeks of the trip I was with others, but for a week I went hiking by myself and spent a few extra days on Easter Island.
Tours are a great option. You can always take a tour which gives you the option to interact with others but still allows you the freedom to do your own thing and enjoy your own company.
If given a choice, I prefer to do most of my trips with friends and family. The combination of traveling and people I love is my absolute favorite thing. However, it is the times that I’ve been solo that I meet other people and learn the most about myself.
